Washington UBI renewal reminders
Washington UBI renewal reminders
UBI/business licenses with state or city endorsements are renewed annually. The Business Licensing Service (BLS) sends a courtesy renewal reminder one month before the license expires.
Renewals are due by the expiration date printed on the license.- You can renew a Business License online via My DOR (secure.dor.wa.gov). The site provides step-by-step renewal flow and lets you update addresses, trade names, endorsements, and contacts during renewal.
You may be eligible to renew up to two months before the expiration date.- Payment options include ACH (bank account), credit/debit card (third-party processing fee ~3.25%), and other methods. After processing, you can print the updated license from My DOR.- Late renewals are subject to penalty fees.
The Business Licensing Service charges late penalties (renewals received after the expiration date are charged a late penalty fee); variable penalty rules apply (see DOR variable processing fees page, which notes late penalty is half the endorsement fee or up to $150 for late renewals).
A limited late penalty fee waiver may apply in specific circumstances (eligibility rules published on DOR help pages).- For corporations and LLCs, you must file an Annual Report with the Washington Secretary of State to maintain active status and keep the UBI in good standing.
Annual reports are due by the last day of the month in which the business was originally formed or registered. Filing window: file up to 180 days before the expiration date (SOS allows filing earlier than BLS renewals).- Practical compliance tips: keep SAW/My DOR contact emails and mailing addresses current, set calendar reminders (2 months prior to BLS renewal and by the Secretary of State due date), use My DOR to renew and print receipts, consider automations/financial calendar and bookkeeping to account for renewal fees, and document renewals for evidence.
If you miss renewal, your business may be placed in inactive status and subject to penalties; you remain responsible for taxes/fees until reinstated.
